                     THE HIGH POWER RIFLE RANGE

The first installation of a range for use by the members of the
Delaware County Field and Stream Association  to be used for high power
rifle shooting began in the 1940's and was located near the club's
northwest property line. It began as a 200 yard range and later, after
the entrance road was built,it was modified to be 100 yards.
The range was primarily built to accommodate those members who used
high power rifles for the purpose of hunting and to enable them to sight
in their rifles prior to the hunting season. Over the years, with many
new members who had other interests in shooting such as competitive
events, training programs and demonstrations, the range was modified to
accommodate them.
The range became very popular for various types of shooting
experiences including reloading and testing rifles, and those
who enjoyed shooting just for its pleasures.
There being a slight difference in usage between hunters and target
shooters, and to keep the club's range available to all and in harmony
together, range rules were established that covered safety and proper
range procedures for all who used the club's facilities. These rules of
safety and proper usage are very important for all users of high power
rifles at the range as well as at home. All members are advised to
obtain and use the club's published rules booklet.
Over the many years of operation, the high power rifle range has
always provided a special time for those who use the a rifle to hunt and
to get their rifles sighted in and operating well before the hunting
season begins. The months of October to December of each year are the
scheduled times for the rifle hunters to get their rifles ready for the
hunt. The club also provides a Range Captain to oversee the range during
that period and to help the shooters when needed.
Range leadership is very important at all of the club's ranges and
especially so at the high power rifle range. The Chief Range Officer of
the range has several assistants and all contribute their time and labor
for the good welfare of the club. These dedicated members are the
backbone of those who keep the club in good order and they are
responsible for maintaining the range and making sure that all rules of
safety and conduct are observed.
Competitive events in various forms are scheduled annually and all
members are invited to participate in the events along with any
non-members or guests that pay a nominal fee to shoot. The dates and
times of the contests are published and posted at the range and included
in the monthly news letter.

Today's youth are tomorrow's leaders.  Introduce them to the shooting sports!
