AIRGUN*HQ'S Introduction to Field Target Shooting

by Bert Northrup

The most common type of shooting that most people do is getting together with a couple of friends to go out plinking at targets which fall down or jump around. Field Target shooting is 'plinking' raised to new heights. The targets are metal silhouettes which range in shape from common small game like
rats, crows, rabbits to exotic shapes like ants, mosquitoes, duelling cobra's. You never know what you might see at a match. The neat part is that these targets have a kill zone which is a hole varying from 1/2 inch to 2 inches located generally where you would aim if the game were real. *IF* you hit the kill zone, you are immediately rewarded with the target falling down making a lot of noise. If you miss the kill zone but hit the target face, it seems to me as if the target is laughing at you with its plunk noise.
After you have been at this game a while you can tell a hit from a miss without even looking. A hit sounds like 'Plink ... crash', a miss sounds like 'plunk'.

After the target(s) are knocked down, you don't have to walk down range to reset the targets. Just pull a string and you are ready to shoot again.

To make things interesting, you place some targets at various ranges from 10 to 50 yards hiding behind trees or under logs and other challenging locations. Get a bunch of friends together and spend the afternoon having fun. This basically is what a field target match consists of. The only difference
between a small local match and a National or World level match is how far your buddies travel to shoot with you.

There is also a good article by Jack Kirkendoll with some good pictures in the new Beeman catalog.  If field target shooting sounds interesting, or you want more information post a note and I will try to explain or expand.
